They have so much potential than a lot of painters give them credit for. It's interesting because I found myself over the past year actually discovering the same exact things when experimenting with the Contrasts in different ways. In the Mega-Gargant tutorial they use red Contrasts and green Contrasts over gray primer as well. The thing that I love about their Treebeard tutorial is that he uses Skeleton Horde over gray primer which as I said something that I didn't think could ever work. I used their tutorials for painting Treebeard as well as when I painted my Sons of Behemat Mega-Gargant earlier this year. Two of their current tutorial painters have used the Contrasts over GW's Mechanicus Standard Gray which really surprised me! Another very cool thing I learned from the GW studio guys is that Contrasts can be used over undercoats of medium and even darker grays. Warhammer TV's own studio painters are where I got some of the ideas for using multiple layers of Contrasts on top of each other. I've also discovered something very interesting in my travels with the Citadel Contrasts. also worth mentioning - if a 9th Age gamer is looking to get a Sylvan army painted up, where you've got all of that wood, all of those various types of treemen and other wooden things that need painting, man this technique can get a Sylvan army done in no time at all and look really nice on the tabletop! Just grab several pots of each of the brown colors from the Contrast range and you've got a serious base coating tool that will get all of that wood done! I was surprised that this turned out to be one of the easier models I've painted! They then got single dry brush highlights of either Citadel light gray or tan paint or Vallejo light gray or tan paint, depending on the detail.

Their clothing got diluted Cygor Brown Contrast, Nazdreg Yellow Contrast and Apothecary White Contrast. The cloaks got Space Wolves Grey Contrast. The hobbits got Guilliman Flesh Contrast for their skin. The large stone he's holding got a layer of Basillicum Grey Contrast followed by a drybrush highlight of Citadel Dawnstone paint.

The green areas got dry brush highlights of Citadel light green paint. His beard was Camo Creed green Contrast and the leaves were Ork Flesh Contrast. This was followed up with a dry brush highlight of Vallejo light gray paint.

I used two Citadel Contrasts and one Citadel Shade on his bark in the following order: Aggaros Dunes Contrast, Skeleton Horde Contrast, and Agrax Earthshade Shade. Treebeard was spray primed in Vallejo Desert Tan. I painted Treebeard and both hobbits in just over two hours! In the old days, the "noob" version of me would have primed all of them in black, and then spent weeks frustratingly painting layer paints over everything before struggling to find the right washes for shades and then trying to find the right colors for highlights.īut now I paint these kinds of models without fear because I understand how the Contrasts and paints will behave. The thing that amazes me is how quickly you can get large areas of models up to pretty darn close to a display standard just from layering a few Contrasts and then adding some highlights over the top of them. This latest miniature project really shows the potential in the Contrasts range to achieve some pretty nice models. In addition, a flesh Contrast along with some yellow, purple and grey Contrasts complete the paint jobs on the two hobbits Merry and Pippin. His beard and leaves got two different green Contrast colors from range. This time it's the Mighty Treebeard from Middle Earth and his companions Merry and Pippin, showing the results of layering several Contrasts over each other, using a triple transparency to achieve the shading and highlighting on his wooden skin. My latest Citadel Contrasts project this time focuses on several of the brown colors in the Contrasts range, which in my opinion are some of the best colors in the entire range.
